Ministry of Environment Cooperates with Financial Intelligence Unit Against Money Laundering in the Environmental Sector

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Environment and the Financial Intelligence Unit of the National Bank of Cambodia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Information Exchange to Combat Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing in the Environmental Sector, on Friday, 11 March, the Minister of Environment, Say Sam Al, and the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, Susan Sith, as the main signatories.

The Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit of Cambodia of the National Bank of Cambodia, Say Sam Ath, stated that the signing ceremony of the MoU was held in the process of exchanging information and promoting local cooperation to ensure security and safety for the people.

She said the signing of the MoU not only links the two institutions, but also signals the beginning of a joint responsibility in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing in the field of environment. She added that this is an important testament to boosting domestic cooperation and mobilizing relevant authorities in joint efforts to find, prevent and crack down on money laundering and terrorist financing.

The Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment, Net Pheaktra, also stated that the MoU aims to foster the exchange of information related to anti-money laundering efforts and terrorist financing data in the environmental field.

He said the signing of the MoU between the two institutions also acts as a joint mechanism to strengthen cooperation on prevention illegal crimes that pose a threat to the security, safety and development of the nation, the region and the world.
